Outer Wilds, the crowd-funded space exploration game from Mobius, will be a timed Epic Games Store exclusive.

In an update on the game's fig page (via Resetera), a statement from Mobius revealed, 'Outer Wilds will first be released on Xbox One and on PC via the Epic Games Store, with additional platforms coming later.'

The decision was likely made due to the publishing partnerships that the developer has entered into since its original pitch.

'Throughout the development of the game, we've welcomed helpful partnerships,' the statement read. 'With Annapurna Interactive, Xbox, and Epic to support us and keep our small studio running long enough to ship the game at the level of quality that it is today. Each of these partnerships has enabled us to make the game better and more accessible for everyone who will play it.'

Outer Wilds was first planned to release in Q2 2016, and it was scheduled for PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam. The shift to the Epic Games Store has caused some negative feeling among the game's backers, who expected a PC release.

It's worth bearing in mind, though, that for a small developer whose project began via crowd-sourcing, it's a good thing that Mobius will receive more money from sales on the Epic Games Store than it would on Steam.
