PC classic Outcast is to be rebooted by its original creators – provided it hits its $600,000 target on Kickstarter.

A Kickstarter for the game launched yesterday which promises to take “one of the most engrossing open-world action adventure games ever, and [bring] it to the modern age of video-gaming” with enhanced 1080p visuals and improved gameplay elements.

The remake will be developed by Fresh3D, a team comprised of most of the original game’s creators, including creative director Frank Sauer, technical director Yann Robert, and gameplay advisor Yves Grolet.

“Outcast has been critically acclaimed to the point it has reach some cult status among many PC gamers,” wrote the developer. “However, the software-only nature of the original engine meant the game has been ignored by many at a time when hardware-accelerated 3d polygons was becoming the norm (and they loved flat corridors apparently 😛 ). Now we have the opportunity to bring this fantastic game to a wider and newer audience and to reward existing fans with brand new visuals and improved gameplay.”

Various stretch goals have also been confirmed, including further visual enhancements and DX11 support once the project reaches $950,000, Oculus Rift support at $1m, and a release on next-generation consoles at $1.35m.

Hitting $1.7m will also lead to a brand new world featuring new quests and gameplay, and help “pave the way towards Outcast II”.

The game is scheduled to release around October 2015. To back the project, head through to Fresh3D’s Kickstarter.
