Jagex’s beloved retro MMORPG Old School RuneScape is doing better than ever as the 2013 re-release of the 2007 classic has somehow surpassed its all-time peak player count.
As World of Warcraft Classic players continue to swarm the MMO, Jagex has confirmed that Old School RuneScape has officially managed to hit its best ever peak concurrent player count.
Old School RuneScape hits all-time player record
Jagex’s new player count record comes just months after the game already hit another record. Back in December 2024, RuneScape surprisingly crushed previous records with an all-time peak of 231,719 players.
Over the last month, the MMORPG has come ridiculously close to hitting that record again. However, on Sunday, August 3, 2025, players not only managed to hit that peak again, but also surpass it.
Jagex took to social media to celebrate its win, telling players: “Thank you all for playing Old School RuneScape. Today we broke our peak player count.” However, the company didn’t reveal exactly what that new peak player count is.
Via MisplacedItems, a script that scrapes the front page of RuneScape to keep an ongoing chart of concurrent players, we now know the exact peak of OSRS: 240,756 players. That’s a total of almost 9,000 additional players jumping into the aging MMORPG.
Many have decided to take vacations from their MMOs of choice as of late to dive into OSRS, and it’s been huge for Jagex. MMO players who have jumped ship for a bit have been taken aback by the fact that OSRS actually respects their characters’ growth.
“I find it so fresh that I can play a character that will not be irrelevant one year later,” one player said on Reddit.
The longevity of OSRS should be celebrated, and it’s amazing to see a game continue to break engagement records so far into its life. While the MMO has never hit the highs of, say, Final Fantasy XIV, it’s amazing to see its popularity continue to climb as time marches on.
