Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning has revealed that he is designing a game that features content even “more traumatic” than Grand Theft Auto 5’s torture scene.

Discussing the controversial scene as part of a larger interview with CVG, Lanning said that he’s “working on some stuff, at a design level, that is going to be more traumatic. I’m not sure I’m going to able to make it. I’m designing stuff and I’m like, wow, this might be really intense, at a basic core level. I’m really trying to think it through. But part of me wants it. That intensity.”

Though Lanning has yet to reveal his new title, CVG suggests that it could be The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot, “a dark first- and third-person shooter set in the Oddworld equivalent of Afghanistan, Fangustan” that sees players take on the role of Fangus, a character “enslaved as a pitfighter and infected with rabies”.

“I’m trying to find a balance between charm and intensity,” continues Lanning. “In that intensity, in the way a particular character works, it might be a shocker for some. It might not be something they’re expecting. I’m not sure I can make it, I’m not sure I can finance it. I don’t think it’s going to make worse people – and if I did I wouldn’t make it.

“Remember the line about Mortal Kombat? We thought the world was going to end because you were pulling out spines. But it was great fun!”

GTA 5 hit the headlines last month for its uncompromising torture scene, which sees players torture an unarmed man through a variety of techniques. One media outlet described the scene as “unnecessary” and a “flawed sequence that may draw attention away from a lot of things GTA5 does that are worth talking about for the right reasons”.

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, an HD remake of the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, is due for release later this year.
