Despite earlier reports stating that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion would be a day one title for the Xbox 360, during a conference call with analysts, Take Two has announced that the game will now ship in the second quarter of its next fiscal year. This second quarter runs from February to April 2006, and the delay affects the PC version, too, which will be released simultaneously with the Xbox 360 version.

Paul Eibeler, Take-Two’s President and CEO, commented on the reason for the delay: “We are moving the launch of Elder Scrolls IV to our 2nd quarter, based on the Bethesda Softworks requiring additional development time to ensure the title meets gamers’ high expectations for this popular franchise.”

The game was to be the only launch game from Take Two’s 2K Games publishing subsidiary, but NBA 2K6, NHK 2K6 and Amped 3 all look set for launch from 2K Sports. Top Spin 2 is due early in 2006.

Public opinion of the Xbox 360 has been pretty low recently, particularly on internet forums. The biggest problem centres on uncertainty over the exact launch titles and the number of consoles that will be available on day one. Oblivion’s delay isn’t going to help things as it was one of the most anticipated launch games. In truth, with rumoured hardware shortages, a great launch line-up isn’t essential for the console’s early success, as early adopters will clear out initial stocks no matter what games are available.
