The land of Cyrodil is now filled with floating messages as the Skyrim Together mod team moves to mod The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. While modding for the new Elder Scrolls game is nowhere near as rich as a usual mainline release, modders are still working hard to bring new experiences to fans.
Released on Nexus Mods, the new Ghosts of Tamriel mod adds Dark Souls’ player messaging mechanic to the entirety of Cyrodil. Just like in Dark Souls, this feature allows players to “share wisdom” with others and “pay respect to adventurers who sadly died”.
Oblivion Remastered gains Dark Souls messages
Available to download here, the Ghosts of Tamriel mod can be accessed at any time in game by opening “the quick menu” and pressing either Enter on keyboard of “left bumper + bottom face button” on controller.
After opening the “typing interface”, players will then be able to type any message they want. Additionally, the mod allows other players’ messages to appear within the game world as floating stones which can be interacted with.
“You can upvote or downvote messages, if a message receives too many downvotes it will be removed,” the mod creators explained. “Upvoting ensures other players can see messages so use it and reset their expiration date (24 hours since last upvote).”
Crucially, the mod also allows players to manually hide specific messages they’ve already read to remove clutter or even just eliminate message stones that are in the way of an item they want to pick up. It’s all rather well thought out.
The Oblivion Remastered mod has a lot more freedom than the traditional Dark Souls messages that inspired it. Since players can type whatever they like, Cyrodil can be filled with whatever messages players can dream of. (Thank God for the downvote button.)
To install the Ghosts of Tamriel mod, players can either use a mod manager like Nexus’ Vortex or follow these steps:
- Install OBSE
- Extract the files at the root of your game install.
- Launch the game using OBSE.
While Oblivion Remastered may not have the mod support of, say, Skyrim, there’s still a tonne of fans working on mods for the latest Elder Scrolls game. Ghosts of Tamriel is an awesome addition… depending on who is actually leaving messages around Cyrodil.
