Minecraft creator Notch has clarified his views on piracy – explaining that while he doesn’t approve of it, he doesn’t think it’s a major crime, either.
While Notch has never hidden his opinions on piracy, he’s getting fresh attention now due to comments he made on Twitter yesterday. A gamer from Panama asked Notch if he had any free Minecraft accounts, as he couldn’t afford a legit copy of the game. Notch responded:
“Just pirate it. If you still like it when you can afford it in the future, buy it then. Also don’t forget to feel bad. ;)”
In a later Tweet, he further explained:
“I don’t exactly ‘approve’, but I think it’s a minor offense in the scale of things. Jaywalking level. Littering.”
Somewhat predictably, the story was picked up by the gaming press (including us, now). A bemused Notch claimed that several sites “missed the point”, insisting that this has always been his stance on the issue, long before Minecraft became such an enormous hit.
He also poked fun at the attention that his Tweets are now given.
“Hamburgers are either tasty or not tasty, and I respect your opinions on the matter. #SafeTweets”
This last message received several responses accusing the developer of “going soft” and “spineless, wishy-washy handwaving”.
It must be odd when suddenly everything you say is subjected to intense scrutiny, though given the ridiculous success of Minecraft, I doubt Notch minds much.
Personally, I think his views are quite sensible.
