The Tomb Raider reboot set for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year will not be released for Wii U, developer Crystal Dynamics has said.
Tomb Raider global brand director Karl Stewart believes it wouldn’t be right to port the game to Nintendo’s new console.
“When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform,” Stewart told the Crystal Habit Podcast (via the Eidos forum).
“Given that we’ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across. If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality.”
Eidos is, however, in talks to bring the game to Mac, but can’t guarantee this version will release alongside the console and PC games.
Given the reported ease at which current generation games can be ported to Wii U, it seems a somewhat odd decision not to look at the platform. Even if the game provides no unique features over the other versions, surely the extra processing power would enable a few extra bells and whistles to be applied.
