A sequel to the mostly excellent FPS The Darkness is still very much on the cards, comic book company Top Cow Productions told Joystiq at the New York Comic Con over the weekend.

Quizzed on the subject of The Darkness 2, sales and marketing director Atom! Freeman said: “There are certain rights issues that we needed to clear up in order to move ahead with The Darkness 2. Those are getting cleared up. While there are no specific plans, it is definitely … still on all of our minds.”

Pushed further on the subject, he added: “We loved the game. The fans loved the game. There’s no reason to not do another one. Just making sure that all of our ducks are in a row so that we can begin that process.”

Rumours of a sequel to The Darkness go back to Comic Con 2008 and it’s been regularly popping up for air ever since. Earlier this year The Darkness 2 showed up on the CV of Digital Extremes texture artist Emmanuel Pappas, indicating the Canadian studio is working on the follow-up to 2K’s comic book action title.

The first game was created by Starbreeze, but the studio ruled itself out of development duties for the sequel last year. Digital Extremes, on the other hand, has already worked with 2K on BioShock 2.
