“No game will topple World of Warcraft”, Star Trek Online developer Cryptic has admitted.
Speaking to trade site MCV, Cryptic Studios COO Jack Emmert said it is “silly” for rival developers to try to replicate Blizzard’s fantasy MMO.
“Many companies try to replicate Warcraft’s gameplay, but that’s just silly. If someone wants WoW, they’ll play WoW,” he said.
In December last year, Blizzard itself warned developers against copying WoW’s fantasy style.
Blizzard lead producer Shane Dabiri said: “Players of World of Warcraft don’t want to be doing the same things in another MMO. They want a new experience.
“I think the industry needs to move in that direction to come up with some innovative new MMOs that are trying really different things. Take City of Heroes – at least that’s something that’s not a fantasy game.”
WoW’s already spectacular popularity is set to strengthen even further with the release of expansion Cataclysm.
