Wii U, set to launch in 2012, won’t feature the ability to play DVDs and Blu-ray discs, Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata has confirmed.
“Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities,” said Iwata during a post-E3 Q&A.
He added: “The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”
While true that most consumers already have a device which is capable of playing DVDs, those wishing not to have multiple devices sat under their TV are likely to feel a little disappointed by the lack of disc-based media functionality.
