Nintendo doesn’t have any plans to release another Mario Kart title on Wii U or 3DS, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has said.
Talking to Re/Code about the difference between Nintendo and other game developers, Fils-Aime explained that there is “a core difference in how we approach game development versus what tends to happen in the industry.”
“There’s a new Madden every year,” he said. “There’s a new Call of Duty every year. There’s only one Mario Kart for a particular platform. There’s going to be only one for the Nintendo 3DS. There’s going to be only one for the Wii U. Our challenge is, how do we take that franchise and make it broad, make it appealing to the point where we can sell five, 10, 15 million copies?”
Nintendo launched Mario Kart 7 on Nintendo 3DS in 2011 and Mario Kart 8 on Wii U earlier this year. It has never released two Mario Kart titles on the same platform.
Mario Kart 8’s first DLC pack, which introduces 8 new courses, 4 new vehicles and 3 new characters, goes on sale next Thursday, November 13.
