Nintendo has no intention to decrease the price of the Nintendo Switch, instead focusing its efforts on selling high quantities of units and its peripherals (via Destructoid).
To be frank, the Switch is enjoying an excellent year. Its little brother, the Switch Lite, arrived in September and Japanese consumers snapped up 160,000 units of the new console in its launch week. Sales of the original Nintendo Switch rose to 64,000 sold during that week, too. Tidy. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that its first-party titles are booming; Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the UK’s fastest-selling Switch game of this year. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the most successful title of the series, and Pokémon Sword & Shield is looming.
So, when Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa says the company isn’t going to dock the price of the Switch any time soon, it makes a lot of sense. In a digital discussion question and answer, he was queried over whether or not the console would experience a price dip within the next two years. Nintendo wants to ‘maintain the value’ of its products by maintaining their price points for ‘as long as possible’. Furukawa concluded that ‘because profitability can fluctuate depending on quantities produced in the future, we’re not estimating any specific decrease in cost.’
Almost 42 million Switches have been sold worldwide since its launch two years ago. It seems that the company will continue its pricing strategy for the console because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But, if it’s got Joy-Con drift, talk to customer support.
