Nintendo Switch sold approximately 80,000 units in the UK during its opening weekend, retailers have confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz.
The figure places the console at double the 40,000 launch units of the Wii U in 2013, but lacking behind the Xbox One’s 150,000 and PS4’s 250,000. 3DS also debuted stronger with 113,000 units.
So, a steady launch, but the Switch will require continued interest from consumers should Nintendo wish to avoid a repeat of the Wii U. A stream of first-party – and some third-party – games is the plan, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe next in line on April 28.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was unsurprisingly the best-selling Switch launch game, selling to almost every Switch owner. 78 per cent of the game’s launch sales came on Switch, with 22 per cent on Wii U.
The Switch version alone becomes the third biggest-ever Zelda launch, behind Wind Waker on GameCube and Twilight Princess on Wii, according to GfK.
Three other Switch titles entered the chart, including 1-2 Switch at No.4 and Super Bomberman R at No.7. The Switch launch of Just Dance 2017 helped Ubisoft’s game back into the Top 40 at No.24. Skylanders Imaginators’ arrival on Switch wasn’t enough to help it back into the chart.
