Nintendo has chopped a massive 10,000 yen from the retail price of its Nitnendo 3DS in Japan, reducing the cost of the device to only 15,000 yen – that’s a drop from £197 to around £118.
The new Japanese retail price will come into effect on August 11. The handheld only launched in Japan on February 26, 2011.
Nintendo said the price reduction will “create momentum for the Nintendo 3DS and accelerate its market penetration toward the year-end sales season, when the line-up for the applicable software shall be enriched”.
Similar price cuts will take place in Europe and North America during the July-September quarter. It’s not known what cuts will be made in these territories.
Nintendo also confirmed that Super Mario 3DLand and Mario Kart 7 will launch in November and December this year respectively.
