Nintendo as ever are doing things differently to the opposition. With both Microsoft and Sony touting the high definition capabilities of their next-gen consoles it would seem Nintendo think HD is a waste of time.

Speaking to the US press Perrin Kaplin, Nintendo of America’s vice president of corporate affairs, spoke about how she felt HD will be costly to developers and gamers alike and will not bring any benefit to the games.

Companies focused on outdoing each other for technology’s sake are using the power of public relations to confuse the media into thinking high-definition is a live-or-die part of the games of the future,” said Kaplan.

HD may be one of the technologies of the future,” she added, “but is it the gaming industry’s only future? We don’t think so.

This stance is typical of Nintendo who never fail to be unique, but once gamers see the visual quality of HD they may feel somewhat under-whelmed by the Revolution. There is no denying that HD compatible sets are currently expensive in Europe but the prices are tumbling and will continue to do so over the coming months.

Nintendo doesn’t plan for the system to be HD compatible,” said Kaplin, “as with that comes a higher price for both the consumer and also the developer creating the game.

Kaplin went on to give the typical stance that good graphics do not make good games. “With the technology being built into the Revolution, we believe the games will look brilliant and play brilliantly. This can all be done without HD.
