Nintendo has been hacked, according to a report by Reuters. The hack comes shortly after hackers targeted Sony and gained access to personal information of more than 100 million of its customers.
Nintendo has now become the latest victim of cyber criminals. However, the company claims the attack has not placed any of its customers’ information at direct risk.
“The server contained no consumer information. The protection of our customer information is our utmost priority,” Nintendo of America stated in an e-mailed response to the breach. “We constantly monitor our security,” it added.
The hacker group Lulzsec has claimed responsibility for the attack on Nintendo via its Twitter feed. Lulzsec recently also gained access to the Sony Pictures Entertainment, as well as prominent US media outlets Fox.com and PBS television.
In its Twitter statement Lulzsec said it “didn’t mean any harm, Nintendo had already fixed it anyway”.
Nintendo’s latest home console, codenamed Project Cafe, is set to be revealed at the company’s E3 conference on Tuesday. Read our live report of Nintendo’s conference from 5pm BST tomorrow.
