Nintendo has released the latest sales figures for the Nintendo DS. Since the handheld’s launch in Europe on March 21 the console has sold over one million units, having sold 500,000 units in the first three weeks it went on sale. A quarter of all European sales have been in the UK, with 250,000 units sold in three months.

Global sales figures are equally strong with over five million DS’ making their way into people’s hands. The DS has certainly sold well, meeting the targets Nintendo set in its financial statements earlier this year.

The European launch of Nintendo DS has been a massive success,” said Nintendo Europe’s senior director of marketing, Jim Merrick, “with sales shattering all previous records in the opening weekend and remaining consistently strong.”

There has been a drought of games on the Nintendo DS in recent weeks, but things should pick up with Nintendo promising many titles, such as Nintendogs and Mario Kart DS, by the end of the year.

This product reflects Nintendo’s dedication to innovation and the advancement of gaming, providing novel and exciting new ways to play games,” said Merrick. “European consumers have adopted Nintendo’s sense of fun and innovation to give fantastic support to the Nintendo DS.”
