While many eyes were focused on the shiny new Nintendo Switch 2 and its swathe of games during the recent console-focused Direct, some others were drooling over the brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller. A true wireless recreation of the awesome 2001 original—albeit with some new modern buttons—the new controller looks like an absolute steal.

During its reveal, Nintendo explained that the new GameCube controller would only be functional in Nintendo Switch Online GameCube games. However, the company now claims this isn’t actually the case.

Yeah, the Switch 2 GameCube controller can play other games

In a new statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo confirmed that the revised GameCube controller is “designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games”. However, the company also explained that the new controller is largely functional with other titles on the system.

“Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games,” Nintendo explained.

The Nintendo GameCube controller just looks so beautiful.

Depsite the fact that Switch 1 controllers can work on Nintendo Switch 2, the new GameCube controller will only be functional on the new console. Nintendo explained that the adorable revived gamepad can only be used on the new machine despite the fact that it’s just a controller.

“The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch,” the company said.

Of course, for those who want a GameCube controller on the original Switch, original versions of the controller can be plugged in via the official GameCube Controller Adapter… which also works on Switch 2. Unfortunately, the new controller can’t be used on the older console at all.
