For the first time in six years, Nintendo has reported a decline in profits. In the six month period ended September 2009, net sales were down 34.5 per cent and net income was down 53.4 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Nintendo attributed the decline to being “adversely affected by the appreciation of the yen and the price cut on ‘Wii’ hardware.”
Regarding Wii hardware sales, Nintendo said “there were fewer software titles that briskly drove hardware sales this six-month period versus the same period a year ago”. Wii hardware sales were down 10.1 million compared to the same six month period in 2008.
