Ninja Theory has revealed a host of new information on Razer, its canned next-gen project that would have combined the “frenetic melee combat” of DmC: Devil May Cry with the “action gunplay” of Vanquish to create a third-person squad-based action MMO.
The developer posted the entire design documents for the cancelled game on its website, along with some pre-production trailers teasing what could have been.
“Razer is a game concept designed for Xbox One, PS4 and PC that sadly didn’t make it past publishing green light,” explained Ninja Theory. “It was a game we designed in conjunction with a publisher to satisfy their desirable feature list. At the time we were developing an iOS game, an online multiplayer melee game as well as exploring next-gen art pipelines.
“Razer was a game that was to bring all these elements together into an epic massively co-op sci-fi adventure. It involved the idea that a huge alien creature had enveloped our planet. It would take thousands of players months if not years to coordinate guerrilla-warfare on a massive scale to kill this beast.”
The game was said to be in development in house for 3 months before pulling the plug.
The vision for Razer was to create “a persistent beast in the cloud” that would have led to “the world’s biggest boss fight”, and which would have taken “millions of players” to take down.
“At the time, the publisher we were working with wanted a concept that was taking advantage of emerging elements such as cloud gaming, communities and second screen gameplay,” Ninja Theory continues. “We thought that cloud gaming means very little to people and that it might be cool to turn it into a giant monstrous AI creature that you have to kill.”
Razer would have been available as a full price retail game, or as a free digital download with a restricted level cap, with extensive post-release content and support planned for 5+ years after launch.
“You are one of a million Razers, elite soldiers sent back to Earth to fight a guerrilla war against the Beast,” reads the synopsis. “This is a hybrid hack-and-slash / shooter action game focused squarely on squad based cooperative play with the social interface features of an MMO.”
Ninja Theory announced its next game, Hellblade, for release first on PS4 during last week’s Gamescom. A release date has yet to be announced.
