Last month EA and Criterion set fans a challenge: promote the NFS Hot Pursuit launch trailer so that it gains 1 million views by December 12 and be rewarded with some free cars.

So, were fans successful? No, not by a long shot.

At the time of writing the trailer has 668,695 views, around two thirds of the required one million views. Despite this failure, Criterion still wants to say thanks to fans and is handing over the three promised super car convertibles.

“We’d like to thank you all for sharing the trailer with your friends and making sure that everybody knows that Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is the best, most intense (and VGA-winning!) racing game of the year,” wrote Criterion on the game’s blog. “So, as an early holiday gift, we’ve decided to give the three convertibles for free to everyone playing Hot Pursuit. Look for them in an upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title update.”

It’s a little embarrassing for EA and Criterion that the trailer failed to reach a million views. Not only that, but it didn’t really get very close.

At least Criterion had enough festive cheer left to hand out the new cars anyway.
