According to Jez Corden of Windows Central, PlayStation console exclusives that have been released on PC will be playable on the next Xbox. There have been numerous rumors about the next Xbox being more like a PC than a console, and PlayStation titles ported to PC such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima will be playable on Xbox through the machine supporting Steam and the Epic Games store.
Jez Corden writes that “Where the Xbox console will differ from a traditional Windows PC is that it will feel like a traditional Xbox console out of the box”. Supposedly, the next Xbox will have a similar onboarding experience to the Series X/S, and you could stay within the Xbox ecosystem if you wanted. However, you will also be able to use the console like a PC to “access games traditionally not available on Xbox, including PlayStation games on Steam, mouse and keyboard-first games like League of Legends, or even classic games from GOG”.
What We Know About PS6 and Next Xbox
Again, this isn’t the first time the next Xbox has been rumored to be more of a PC than a traditional games console. Moore’s Law Is Dead originally reported that the next Xbox will support PC storefronts like Steam, and they have also claimed that Microsoft’s machine will use the AMD Magnus APU, which is an APU that combines a CPU and GPU on a single chip. It will be the largest ever used in a games console, and it will reportedly be 46% larger than the one planned for PS6.
Because of it being more of a PC, it’s predicted that the next Xbox could cost between $800 and $1,200 with the PS6 only costing half of that. However, while the PS6 is expected to be much cheaper, it will also be far less powerful.
The console wars are already pretty much dead, but more PlayStation games playable on Microsoft consoles would basically bury the divide even more. So far, the only PlayStation-published game on Xbox is Helldivers 2, although Marathon will be on Xbox at launch. On the flip side, Xbox has brought many of their IPs to PS5 including Forza Horizon and Gears of War, with Microsoft Flight Simulator and Halo Campaign Evolved both on the way.
Another caveat mentioned in Jez Corden’s report is that the next Xbox won’t have a paywall for online multiplayer. Assuming the PS6 keeps multiplayer locked behind a PS Plus subscription, this would be another feather in the cap of the next Xbox despite it costing more.
We don’t know when both consoles will surface, but Sony’s Mark Cerney has said the PS6 is “top of mind” and reputable leakers have claimed the plan is to release in 2027 “unless unexpected delays happen”.
