It was inevitable, but Sega has now confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog will appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2006. Yuji-Naka is in charge of the project and Sega say he will “create the most intense sensation of speed ever experienced in videogames.” Naka was one of the men who created Sonic back in 1991.
“We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,” said Naka. “With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The ‘rebirth of Sonic’ will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems.”
Sega also revealed the release date for Cromehounds, their forthcoming mech-combat title for the Xbox 360. The game is in development at From Software and will ship in spring 2006, near the launch of the PlayStation 3. The game is said to include competitive and cooperative online play and thousands of upgrade options for the mechs.
The final announcement was for Sonic Riders, a hoverboard racing game in which the characters featured in previous sonic games race against each other in a tournament for a Chaos Crystal. The game is due on PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube in winter 2006.
