The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening received an extended gameplay reveal at Gamescom, which showed off the lush and varied island biomes and its dungeon builder.

The game melds the original’s top-down perspective with a claymation-style art direction, and now Koholint Island is rendered in glorious composite colours and shaders. Link will be able to jump over blockades and onto platforms, therefore opening up the island to greater exploration, which is packed to the brim with detail and mystery. Monsters from the Mario series will make an appearance, along with side-scrolling platforming sections, as a retro twist on the modern remake.

An owl companion will occasionally descend to provide the player hints and direction on where to roam next, and there will be multiple challenges to contend with when accessing its dungeons. Visiting Dampé in his shack will open the unique dungeon creator feature. Colour coding and visual symbols will tell players if their invention works within the bounds of the dungeon challenge. Moreover, intuitive design will ensure that the final chest that the player opens in the custom dungeon is the nightmare key, no matter the approach they took.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is coming to the Switch on September 20, 2019. Watch the extended gameplay video below.
