Titled Star Trek: Legacy, the new game is in development at Mad Doc Software and is scheduled for release by Bethesda Game Studios in September 2006. Said to be an action/strategy game, ST Legacy will span all shows with a single player campaign split into three time periods: Enterprise, The original show, and The Next Generation (which includes Deep Space Nine and Voyager).

The campaign is said to be based around an ancient species called the Iconions, first encountered by Picard in the STTNG episode “Contagion.” You begin the campaign in command of the Nx-01 and as you progress through the game you will earn command points which can be used to upgrade or purchase new ships. Eventually you’ll be in command of up to four units, each unit comprising of one capital ship and two smaller ships. The game will also feature multiplayer support for up to eight players on PC and Xbox Live where you’ll be able to take command of Federation, Klingon, Borg and Romulan vessels.

One of the key elements is the way in which ships are treated in the game. “We treat the ships as your characters. When a ship dies, that’s a big thing in Star Trek. It only happens a few times in the whole 700-plus hours of the whole Star Trek cannon where you see the Enterprise get destroyed. It’s a big thing and it should mean something,” said Mad Doc CEO Ian Lane Davis in an interview with Game Informer.

Over at the Star Trek Gaming Universe Forum a post by Harry, most likely Harry Lang, Senior Director Interactive Viacom Consumer Products, Licensing division of Paramount Pictures, says how the game has been in development for some time now and that we will be “blown away” when screenshots of the game are released.
