FIFA, EA and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have announced the new season of the FIFA Interactive World Cup. The season-long tournament mirrors the real world of football in which competitors from all around the world can participate playing FIFA 09 on PS3.

The fifth FIWC begins with 19 physical Qualifier Events across the globe, beginning in New Zealand on October 25 and moving to Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Italy, South Africa and the US. Players will also be able to compete for 13 places in the final by taking part in online matches over the PlayStation Network. Registration for online qualification will be available directly inside the retail version of FIFA 09 on PS3.

The 32 finalists will compete to be crowned FIFA Interactive World Player of the Year and will be rewarded with an invitation to the FIFA World Player Gala along with a $20,000 cash prize and a KIA Soul. The runner up will receive $5000 and third place will take home $1,000.

“The FIFA Interactive World Cup has established itself as a premier gaming tournament, and the only one under the FIFA banner. Over the last years I have witnessed incredible virtual football action which promises thrilling games and excitement at the upcoming interactive season. I am really looking forward to the kick-off of the 5th edition where everyone has the unique chance to become a real FIFA World Cup champion,” said FIFA executive member Chuck Blazer.

FIFA 09 is scheduled for release on October 3 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PC, PSP and Nintendo DS.
