Furukawa Electric has shown off a new heat sink for the PlayStation 3, which cools the Cell microprocessor and RSX graphics component.
Early release PlayStation 3 consoles featured a first generation heat sink, which cooled both the Cell and RSX. It was a hefty beast weighing 700g. The second heat sink was also an all-in one unit but the weight was reduced to only 500g. With the third-gen heat sink Furukawa Electric has separated the part so the Cell and RSX have individual coolers. The combined weight of the two units is only 350g.
In addition to reducing the weight the new product is smaller in size and is cheaper to manufacture.
The roll-on affect will be a lighter PS3 for consumers.
