An Epic Games trademark for Gears of War: Exile has been discovered, suggesting the development studio is working on more than the third game in the multi-million selling franchise.

Yesterday Epic and Microsoft announced the Gears of War Triple Pack – the first two games and add-on content – later this year will see the release of Gears of War 3, but what exactly is Gears of War Exile?

Late last year Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski was set to announce something at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, but whatever was planned – rumoured to be some kind of Kinect-enabled Gears of War game – got pulled at the last minute.

“There’s a lot of strategising going on and at any point something may shift due to a strategic move that needs to happen. So I came out here potentially announcing something. It turns out the timing’s not right,” explained the Gears of War creator.

It would be a bizarre move on the part of Epic and Microsoft to announce a new Gears of War title when the third game in the series is still some way off.

Exile could be a Kinect-enabled game in the Gears of War universe, but we’d also be happy to see a downloadable prequel episode in the same style of Capcom’s successful Dead Rising: Case Zero.
