It doesn’t take much for the industry to get into a spin. We all remember Nintendo’s famous megaton announcement, for instance, but today saw a very interesting rumour come to light: The possibility of a new GBA. Considering the imminent release of the DS on our shores, this announcement seems to have created a great deal of confusion, with some speculating that Nintendo was planning a next generation GBA as early as this year.
The reality is a slightly less fantastic though. It seems that Nintendo will be merely announcing a new version of the existing GBA console with updated features at their pre-E3 event. Despite the lack of concrete details it seems this updated GBA will include the many new developments made in recent years: wireless connectivity and the ability to play both movies and music. It’s also hoped that they’ll maybe put the headphone socket back…
Wireless connectivity may be the most important aspect here though and may also have something to do with Nintendo’s downloadable content plans for the DS. It’s interesting to see Nintendo still focusing on their older handheld, considering the DS is due to arrive so shortly. However, it seems that the SP is still performing well for Nintendo, so any new GBA could still be very interesting, even in the wake of the DS. Indeed, at the right price a new GBA with media functionality could even hurt the PSP. We’ll watch this story with interest.
