Dusk and Amid Evil publisher New Blood has revealed new gameplay of its in-development classic Fallout successor, and it looks gob-smackingly gorgeous.

Still referred to as the NB-CRPG project, the upcoming CRPG aims to bring back the style of classic Fallout games with modern artwork inspired by the pre-rendered CGI of the aforementioned Interplay games.

New Blood’s Fallout successor looks so good I’m mad about it

In a post on Twitter, or X if you’re like that, New Blood’s Dave Oshry revealed that the NB-CRPG project has abandoned its previous plans for a first-person JRPG combat system within its isometric CRPG world.

When the game was first shown off back in 2022 for the 25th anniversary of the Fallout series, combat sequences would cut to first-person, but that’s no longer the case.

Instead, the NB-CRPG project will now be entirely isometric with combat using the same hexagonal action point system as Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics. However, as is the case with everything New Blood publishers, the game has its own unique twist.

In the new 11-second gameplay clip, Oshry showed off the new Kill Cam system that keeps some of the original pitch’s unique style. After beating  an enemy in contact, a small window appears showing a gorgeous animation of your character executing them with your weapon of choice. It’s so cool. I want to play it now.

“After LOTS of internal discussions we are no longer having first person JRPG style combat in NB RPG – as we’d essentially be developing two games at once,” Oshry said. “We’ll have classic isometric combat + first person kill cams.”

Of course, the CRPG still has the brilliant art style of Alexander Berezin who somehow is able to perfectly recreate the style of Fallout’s original pre-rendered art. Berezin is also working on the first-person Fallout 1 remake Bakersfield which is set to release sometime this decade, and also looks sublime.

The retro-isometric CRPG has been described as a pure “passion project” for Oshry and others in the past, and it’s looking better every time we see it. There’s also still no slated release period for the game which only slightly upsets me.
