Netflix, known mostly for their online TV and Film streaming, might be preparing for big-screen gaming that uses your iPhone as the controller.
We always knew that Netflix were planning an entry to the cloud game-streaming market following on from the launch of Netflix Games. However, a recent code dump from the Netflix mobile app has suggested that iPhones could be used as the controller for Netflix Gaming on TV.
The tweet that allegedly revealed this feature was a reply to a Mark Gurman tweet claiming the above. However, the tweet from Steve Moser seems to provide some much clearer evidence that it’s more than a possibility.
Dialog from the code reads: “A game on your TV needs a controller to play. Do you want to use this phone as a game controller?”
It’s likely that this prompt, if it’s to be believed, is a message to the user followed by options to accept or deny.
The tweet doesn’t reveal much about what games are going to be playable via your phone like this, though it’s likely that the games featured on Netflix Games will make an appearance.
We know that Netflix are ‘serious about cloud gaming,’ and the use of the iPhone as a controller for this seems to be a pretty obvious and likely next-step for the TV streaming giant.
With the recent launch of Amazon Luna in the UK, and the recent closure of Stadia, cloud gaming is a strange market. Netflix’s entry to it will only make it even more mysterious, though the use of mobile phones as controllers could be the feature that cloud-gaming is missing?
