Need for Speed Heat, the next entry into the car-go-fast franchise, will not use loot box mechanics to unlock car customisation options, as stated by EA DICE community manager Ben Walke on Reddit.
Need for Speed Payback had a system where car upgrades would be dispensed by slot machines and loot boxes, and it wasn’t well received. Its successor won’t follow suit, as Walke confirmed that, ‘there are no loot boxes in NFS Heat, and there won’t be.’
‘We plan to have post launch paid-DLC in the form of car packs,’ Walke added when fans queried the veracity of his statement, ‘Honestly, that's it. No loot boxes and the above.’ The first content update will be a 'time-save' pack that reveals all the collectibles on the Palm City map.
External authorities have been turning up the heat on casino style mechanics in video games, and although EA has stood by its ‘surprise mechanics’ in the past, perhaps the increasing scrutiny has led to this outcome for its racing series.
Need For Speed Heat will launch on November 8 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
