Earlier this month NCsoft filed a lawsuit against former employees who went on to form Bluehole Studio, the Korean team behind MMO TERA.

As reported by MMO Culture, Bluehole is accused of stealing “copious amounts of confidential and proprietary NCsoft information, computer software, hardware, and artwork relating to Lineage 3,” and of using this material to create TERA.

In 2009 these employees were convicted of stealing trade secrets, with convictions “mostly upheld by an appellate court”. Following this NCsoft filed a Korean civil complaint in 2010 against the studio that was then overturned.

However, during this period Bluehole managed to launch the Korean version of TERA. En Masse, the American subsidiary of Bluehole, is launching a North American version this May.

It’s unclear whether NCsoft has enough evidence to cause TERA to eventually be shut down, however looking at similar cases like the recent Fallout MMO lawsuit, it’s a distinct possibility.
