Microsoft is riding the mobile phone gaming zeitgeist and declaring Windows Phone 7 its very own handheld platform, according to senior global director Kevin Unangst.
Talking to Kotaku at CES, Unangst said, “this is our mobile platform for games.” Flexing the company’s gaming credentials, Unangst added “the same people who make the Halo game, the same development folks, work on this, this is our mobile console.”
Since the phone’s launch in November, the Windows Phone 7 has become home to over 60 games enabled with Xbox LIVE, which offers a friends list and genuine real Achievements.
Unangst also added that Microsoft is continuing to discuss the possibility of having Epic develop for the device. Epic’s mobile version of the Unreal Engine – which is home to 8/10 powerhouse Infinity Blade – does not currently run on Windows Phone 7.
Microsoft also unveiled plenty of new games for Windows Phone 7 at the conference, including Fable Coin Golf, Rise of Glory, Pac-Man, Halo Waypoint, Fruit Ninja, deBlob Revolution, Tetris and (our personal favourite title) Star Wars: Cantina.
