There was a notable absence of all things Alan Wake this week at E3, which came as a slight surprise after Remedy’s head of franchise development, Oskari Häkkinen, told Joystiq last month that a project was under development – rumoured to be an XBLA title.

When Microsoft head, Phil Spencer, was questioned on the rumour and the subsequent lack of new Alan Wake material in Los Angeles, he said: “I read that … I don’t know that they’ve signed it with anybody.”

Despite the rather disappointing sales figures of the original, Spencer said: “I’d love to work with Remedy again, we have ongoing conversations with them.”

This suggests that an internal Alan Wake project is being undertaken by Remedy (the XBLA outing), but that an official sequel – almost certainly in conjunction with Micorosoft – is yet to be confirmed.

It’s also worth noting that Remedy maintains the IP rights to Alan Wake, with Microsoft merely having secured the publishing rights to the first game.
