Borderlands 3 lead writers Danny Homan and Sam Winkler divulged that Borderlands 4 might be a possibility, in an exclusive interview with Dualshockers.

Although the third game promises to take players beyond Pandora, characters from the previous games have made an appearance across the new planetary destinations. Borderlands has had sequels, pre-sequels, and spin-offs, but three is a magic number. When queried if Borderlands 3 is the third and final game in the series, Homan stated that, ‘there is always room for more story in Borderlands.’

Winkler clarified that Borderlands 3 is ‘definitely a successor to all the games’, but is not necessarily a curtain call for the looter-shooter. Instead, the game will, ‘tie off some threads, have some new threads, and definitely isn’t the end of Borderlands in any way.’

If Gearbox and 2K Games have big ideas for the future of the franchise, they’re understandably keeping it under their hats. Winkler added ‘whatever stories are beyond that, they’ll be connected’ to the core installments. With the introduction of new characters and new worlds, there’s plenty of opportunity to explore more of its narratives and their potential directions.

Borderlands 3 will launch for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on September 13.
