Mojang and its mega hit franchise Minecraft are now officially part of the Microsoft fold, with the $2.5 billion buyout having been completed.
“It’s official, today we welcome Mojang to the Microsoft Studios family,” tweeted head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. “We’re excited for the possibilities ahead w/the Minecraft community.”
The deal was announced back in September with Microsoft promising that its investments in cloud and mobile tech would “enable Minecraft players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the Minecraft community”.
Minecraft creator Markus Persson has also departed the studio, tweeting about his final minutes at the office.
“I left the mojang office for the last time, and didn’t properly say bye because everything is strange. I don’t even know what a fitting bye is. So I just left like it’s a normal day, with normal things happening.”
What happens next with Minecraft remains to be seen, but MS has said it will continue to support the game on rival platforms.
