There’s been some updates overnight on the next Call of Duty game coming in 2023, with it looking increasingly likely it’ll be some sort of continuation of Modern Warfare 2.

Previously, it was reported that Activision may be skipping 2023 for the first person shooter series, due in part to the relatively muted reception to Call of Duty Vanguard.

However, Activision announced their Third Quarter 2022 financial results last night, and appeared to contradict these reports when it came to talking up the success of Call of Duty.

“Activision is looking forward to building on its current momentum in 2023, with plans for next year including the most robust Call of Duty live operations to date, the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series and even more engaging free-to-play experiences across platforms.”

However, Bloomberg – the source of the original report of Activision skipping 2023 – pointed out that this wording doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be a “new” Call of Duty game.

In fact, according to Jason Schreier, it seems this could link in with reports from last month and mean that next year’s game could in fact be a full-priced expansion to Modern Warfare 2.

As per Schreier, the next entirely new game will be made by Treyarch for 2024, but in the meantime Sledgehammer are working on a ‘premium’ expansion for next year.

With the premium tag, it’s implied that therefore it’ll be a full priced game – and presumably include an appropriate amount of content to match.

Whether that means it’ll take the form of an expandalone that won’t require owning the previous game, a full blown sequel or otherwise is still up in the air.

Of course, all of this should still be taken with a pinch of salt, as right now Activision’s focus in on Modern Warfare 2 and the upcoming Warzone 2. We’ll have to wait for a while before any official announcements are made.
