The report estimates that global revenues from mobile phone game sales will quadruple by 2010, rising from $2.6 billion this year to $11 billion come 2010. The research conducted by Informa Telecoms & Media suggests that the market for mobile phone games will treble by the end of the decade, with mobile phone users rising to 3 billion.

The report predicts that online multiplayer games will account for 21 percent of the mobile phone gaming market by 2010.

There is no doubt that mobiles can handle it in terms of graphics, but controls will have to be improved,” said Stuart Dredge, co-author of the report.

Mobile phone games are seen as big business for some of the leading videogame publishers. EA has recently set up dedicated mobile phone development units enabling them to take advantage of the growing market.
