Legendary video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto is currently hard at work on a new franchise for Wii U, he’s told Japanese video game publication Famitsu.

The Mario and Zelda creator believes the struggling Wii U is finally delivering on its promise, but it’s about time we saw a new franchise.

“I hope people are looking forward to the games coming up,” said Miyamoto. “We’ll have Mario Kart 8 out next spring, and at that point we’ll have the whole line-up in place, so I think it’s about time we brought out a new franchise. I can’t give out details, but that’s the title that’s been keeping me pretty busy lately.”

The Wii U line-up Miyamoto speaks of includes Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and finally Mario Kart 8.

Let’s hope Miyamoto has made enough progress on the new franchise to show it off at E3 next summer.
