The Wii U version of Minecraft won’t let players manage their inventory via the GamePad. Instead, the GamePad’s screen will simply be used as an alternate display for off-TV play.
The news was confirmed by Mojang’s director of creative communications Owen Hill (and reported by My Nintendo News), who explains that while the functionality “would be cool”, it isn’t included in the game “at the moment”.
“Not at the moment, sorry,” Hill said when asked whether the Wii U Edition would support the GamePad for crafting and inventory management. “It’s just used as an alternate screen if someone is using the TV. Would be cool though. :)”
The lack of inventory management on the GamePad screen seems like a bizarre omission for Minecraft, which could have benefited greatly from the additional functionality. It isn’t entirely clear from Hill’s tweet whether such functionality is being investigated for a future update, either.
Minecraft lands on Wii U via the Nintendo eShop next Thursday, December 17. Will you still be buying it?
