Indie building game Minecraft will be entering its beta phase on December 20 2010, developer Markus Persson has announced on his blog. The move will bring a price increase – from €9.95 to €14.95 – alongside new content and bugfixes.

Persson also announced some of the first new additions in the beta: proper modding support and a stable API. The developer is also looking to add a “non-intrusive narrative to the game to help drive the game experience early on, and to provide some kind of late game goal”.

Buyers of the game in the beta phase will find themselves subject to a change in the Terms and Conditions, however – all future updates of the game will not be provided for free. This does not affect anybody who purchased at alpha phase.

“The next epoch is upon us! The skies are trembling, pigs are growing wings, and the nether is turning awfully cold, as Minecraft slowly crawls out of Alpha,” wrote Perrson.

Minecraft’s next update will be released next week – before the game hits beta.

Minecraft has been something of an indie hit this year. At time of writing, the game has sold 754,133 copies – and Persson has always been frank about the game’s success.

Minecraft is a bit of a Marmite game in the office – some people love it, some people just can’t see the point. Regardless, it’s nice to see such a unique game reach a wide audience – but if you think you might be interested, we’d advise buying the game before it hits beta phase. Not only is it cheaper, but all future updates will be provided for free. Alternatively, you may also want to deck yourself out with the best gaming laptop for Minecraft too.
