Overnight, indie darling Minecraft from Markus “Notch” Persson surpassed sales of one million copies.
“Minecraft just passed one million copies sold,” Tweeted Persson last night. “We just celebrated with some champagne. Fizzy!”
At the time of writing 1,003,169 Minecraft accounts have been upgraded to premium status – This can be done by either purchasing the game directly, or by activating a gift code. Unredeemed gift codes don’t register as a purchase.
The feat is even more remarkable when you consider that the game is still operating in a beta phase – during which time the game will remain on sale for €14.95, a 25 per cent discount on the regular €20.00.
Paying for a beta sounds outright ludicrous, especially in a time when we expect so much for free. Not only do gamers expect free game demos before launch, but extended pre-release access via free beta tests and then once they’ve got the game they want free extra content too.
It’s amazing then that Minecraft has managed to rack up a million paying players when it has actually only recently entered the beta phase. Now you may want to turn your head to consider the best laptop for playing Minecraft.
