Roaming sandbox build-em-up Minecraft has hit over 20 million registered users, creator Markus “notch” Persson has announced.

The current stats say that 20,165,090 people have registered an account, and of that number 4,674,0578 users have chosen to purchase the game.

Free users are limited to Minecraft Classic, but anyone who pays for the game (which currently costs £16.95) can get the meatier full version, which includes the famous Survival mode.

Minecraft was recently updated to version 1.1, which allowed players to get golden apples and sheep to regrow their wool.

At the end of last year I was encouraged to play Minecraft for the first time, with disastrous and soul-crushing results.
