Speaking during an interview with Business Insider, Microsoft has revealed that there are currently no plans to develop a sequel to Minecraft.

'I really don’t think that makes sense for Minecraft, given the community,' revealed Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft at the Xbox format holder. 'It’s something that always fractures the community.'

To be fair, there's probably no need to work on a sequel right now anyway given how popular Minecraft is. The game is now attracting 91 million monthly active users, and has sold over 150 million copies worldwide.

That means it's the second best-selling video game of all time, behind only Tetris. Blimey.

Furthermore, Mojang creative lead Jens Bergensten gave more food for thought as to why Minecraft 2 wouldn't really make sense.

'I don’t think there’s really a need for Minecraft 2,' Bergentsen commented. 'You would be able to create a Minecraft 2 game in Minecraft.' Good point, innit?

Minecraft was originally released back in 2009 and has hit pretty much every platform out there. While no true sequel has been released, Minecraft has been supported with numerous spinoffs and content packs, including Minecraft: Story Mode, Education Edition, and the upcoming Dungeons.
