In an interview with PlayStation Trophies, Spider-Man Community Director James Stevenson said the upcoming PS4 exclusive is set in a completely new universe, separate to the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield universes, as well as the Tom Holland narrative in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Insomniac Games’ title centres on a 23 year old Peter Parker that’s already been saving the people of New York City for almost ten years, and is close to graduating third-level education. Norman Osborn (better known as Green Goblin) is running for mayor of NYC, while Martin Li (Mister Negative, who was seen at the end of the Spidey trailer during PlayStation’s media briefing) is the boss at Parker’s aunt’s workplace.

But the name on everyone’s lips coming out of Sony’s E3 presser was Miles Morales, who popped up at the end of the Spider-Man gameplay video that appeared on PlayStation’s stage.

‘[Miles] will have a far bigger part than just a cameo,’ Stevenson said when asked about the alternate timeline Spider-Man who made his debut in 2011’s Ultimate Fallout comic book.

After Morales’ appearance, there’s been plenty of speculation on what this means. Will players be jumping from Parker to Morales, or is there co-op involved somehow? While we await the answers to these questions, Spider-Man fans can rest assured that Parker isn’t the only webslinging superhero in this game.

Spider-Man will launch on PlayStation 4 some time in 2018.
