Develop reports that Microsoft has held talks with several European independent studios to bring back its Project Gotham Racing series.
The racing franchise had previously been the product of Bizarre Creations, but since the studio’s acquisition by Activision Microsoft has been left without a development studio for the street racer.
A Develop source indicates that Microsoft is undecided on a studio to take over the reins.
With Bizarre no longer an option, Microsoft’s own Turn 10, creator of the Forza series, was thought to be the primary candidate for the job, but a search for an alternate developer suggests PGR won’t be heading to the Redmond-based studio.
Microsoft is yet to offer comment.
PGR has been associated with the Xbox since the launch of the original console, itself a spiritual successor to the Dreamcast’s Metropolis Street Racer. In November 2005 the series jumped to Xbox 360, with the most recent entry in the franchise, PGR4, hitting Xbox 360 in October 2007.
Regarding possible candidates, Sweden-based SimBin Studios looks a possible option with a racing game heritage behind it. Sheffield-based Sumo Digital could also get a look in, having previously worked on OutRun titles and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. London-based Slightly Mad Studios, responsible for EA’s Need for Speed: Shift, also looks like a decent option.
