Microsoft is not currently working on the Project Gotham Racing franchise, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer has revealed.

Asked on Twitter if we “will ever see Project Gotham Racing again”, Spencer replied: “We aren’t currently working on PGR.”

He went on to explain that while he “really liked the franchise”, the series continued absence is a result of the sheer number of racing IPs on the market.

The last PGR title released was Project Gotham Racing 4 back in October 2007, which followed two years after PGR 3 at the launch of the Xbox 360. Microsoft held on to the IP when developer Bizarre Creations was snapped up by Activision to make commercial failure Blur – a kind of PGR with power-ups.

Since then Microsoft has focussed its efforts on the Forza franchise and spin-off Forza Horizon.

Forza Horizon 2 is rumoured to release this September.
