It would seem that Microsoft are extremely keen to be the first to market with their new console. First, we have people like Tecmo praising them for being so forthcoming with information about their new project and now we have the news that the Xbox 2 dev kits are set to ship some time in the first quarter of 2005.

Bizarrely for once bitter rivals, the first kits to ship will basically be Apple G5s, although they will be running a version of Windows. Due to the fact that Xbox 2 is going to be based on a RISC CPU rather than an Intel one, this switch makes sense but it’s still not something many people would have imagined a couple of years ago. The kits are also rumoured to be shipping with the new Radion R500 graphics card which means it may well soon be time for all you PC upgrade freaks to start saving your pennies, as a commercial release for the card can’t be far behind.

It really is all change for MS these days. Switching away from both Intel and Nvidia is a huge step away from the known for them and, regardless of whether or not the market is ready for it, it appears that the Seattle based giant is serious about its claims of Xbox 2 in 2005.

At least if it’s an Apple it’ll look nice.
